The Realm of Secondhand Souls by Sandra Shea, X

The Realm of Secondhand Souls by Sandra Shea, X
The realm of secondhand souls is a place where antique fabrics hold the secrets of their former owners, where found objects uncover lost worlds, and where a uniquely gifted young woman who has lost nearly everything finally finds herself. In her mesmerizing first novel, Sandra Shea recounts the life of Novena, born on a hot summer night surrounded by a circle of aunts, who offer the protection of their unfettered love. But when Novena is orphaned and sent to live with her aunt Elegia and four boy cousins, she retreats from their boisterous clamor into the realm of her imagination. It provides safe haven for years -- until she is forced back into the world by a tragic disappearance connected to her cousin Zan, torturer of all creatures smaller than himself. Blaming herself for the tragedy, Novena escapes to live with her great-aunt Annaluna, who is besieged by demons of her own, including the ones that reside in the hundreds of shoes that fill her apartment. It is only when Novena stumbles into a vintage clothing store called God of Sand that she begins to recognize her special gifts of insight. In the tattered folds of yesterday's suits and chemises, she can sense the hidden histories and memories that help her stitch her life back together. The setting for THE REALM OF SECONDHAND SOULS is unmistakably contemporary, yet time and place remain deliberately filmy, beautifully illustrating the vaporous, murky boundaries between our dreams and our memories, between the seen and the unseen, and between past and present in a modern world where nostalgia is paramount. Sandra Shea's magical novel is a story of how our families possess us and how our possessions become our family. Enter thismysterious and unforgettable realm, and you will never want to leave.

Soft Interfaces: The 1994 Dirac Memorial Lecture by Pierre-Gilles De Gennes,
Soft Interfaces: The 1994 Dirac Memorial Lecture by Pierre-Gilles De Gennes,
Paul Adrien Maurice Dirac, one of the greatest physicists of the twentieth century, died in 1984. Dirac's college, St. John's of Cambridge, generously endowed annual lectures to be held at Cambridge University in his memory. This volume contains a much expanded version of the 1994 Dirac Lecture by Nobel Laureate Pierre Gilles de Gennes. The book presents an impressionistic tour of the physics of soft interfaces. Full of insight and interesting asides, it not only provides an accessible introduction to this topic, but also lays down many markers and signposts that will be of interest to researchers in physics or chemistry. Features discussions of wetting and dewetting, the dynamics of different types of interface and adhesion and polymer/polymer welding.

Oskar Klein Memorial Lecture - The Oskar Klein Memorial Lecture at Stockholm University, dedicated to the memory of the Swedish physicist Oskar Klein (1894-1977), is held annually since 1988 by a prominent physicist, who also receives the Oskar Klein Medal. The arrangement are sponsored by the University and the Nobel Committee of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

Alfred Korzybski Memorial Lecture - The distinguished Alfred Korzybski Memorial Lecture (AKML) series was begun in 1952. It is an annual event sponsored by the Institute of General Semantics in honor of Alfred Korzybski.

Black arm band theory of history - The 'black armband' view of history is a phrase coined by Australian historian Professor Geoffrey Blainey in his 1993 Sir John Latham Memorial Lecture. He contrasted this view with the Three Cheers view of history.

Alpha Sigma Phi Philippines - ... are four separate fraternities which are using the Greek name Alpha Sigma Phi in the Philippines, and they were organized and remain active to this day at the following universities: Gregorio Araneta University Foundation (1952); University of the East, Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center, College of Medicine; Central Mindanao University (1959); and Silliman University (1965).

Lectures include Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten models, the WZNW model as a prototype of general CFT models, meromorphic CFT, Monstrous Moonshine and the classification of CFT, the non-perturbative dynamics of four-dimensional models, and a derivation of the hadronic structure functions from quantum chromodynamics. The book is suitable for advanced graduate students and researchers in theoretical particle or statistical physics as well as pure mathematicians. This book consists of pedagogical lectures delivered at the Feza Gursey Institute in 1998 on non-perturbative approaches, or conformal field theory, the newer subject area that combines the work of physicists and mathematicians in an effort to extend understanding beyond the current, accepted notions of quantum field theory.
